Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) is a technique of simultaneous recording of the upgoing and downgoing wavetrains which are then separated by computer processing. The enhanced resolution of the VSP profile makes it possible to confirm or deny the presence of indistinct reflections on seismic sections near the well. The VSP profile is particularly well suited for determining the condition existing below the total depth of the well. Since the downgoing wavefield is recorded, multiple reflections can be identified and removed. The same downgoing wavefield can be used to reprocess surface seismic profiles traversing the vicinity of the well.
